Plumbers & Steamfitters Local Union #21
Apprenticeships
Plumbers & Steamfitters Local Union (LU) #21 offers a five-year apprenticeship program that equips apprentices with the requisite skills to succeed in one of two career paths: plumbing / steamfitting; or mechanical equipment service (HVAC). Through their local training facility, the union offers practical training and classroom instruction in asbestos and lead awareness, backflow prevention, refrigerant handling, construction supervision, crane signaling, arc flash awareness, orbital welding, rigging, and other relevant skills. Several of these skills are essential for the construction and maintenance of offshore wind turbines, particularly internal piping systems that handle various fluids and electrical wiring. Graduates become qualified journey-persons, prepared for long term careers that may support offshore wind infrastructure development.
The program offers apprentices continuing education opportunities such as an associate’s degree program through the United Association, International. Plumbers & Steamfitters Local Union #21 is a New York State Department of Labor registered provider of apprenticeships for Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Mechanic apprentices, and Plumber and Steamfitter apprentices.
